APPLE SERVED COURT ORDER TO UNBLOCK TERRORISTS PHONE

On December 2nd, 2015, two terrorists shot and killed 14 Americans during a Christmas party. Following the shooting, the two shooters were found; they had died in a shootout with police on a California highway. Investigators recovered multiple pieces of evidence including a cellphone belonging to one of the terrorists. The investigators believe that there might be information about other attacks on that cell phone, therefore they contacted Apple, the producer of the phone, through a court order to produce software that will allow the CIA and FBI to have access to the data on the phone. Apple has denied to follow the court order and is expected to appeal the court order in the following months.

National security and personal privacy have been a matter of heated debate in the past few years in American politics. Many government officials such as Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) have been against acts such as the Patriot Act and the Freedom Act. Senator Paul actually filibustered the renewal of the Patriot Act. Watch it here! Senator Paul believes that the government should not be collecting bulk cell phone data from American citizens. This is a popular belief among many Libertarians.

There are two sides to every story, and in this story, the two sides could not be more clear. James Comey and the FBI is only asking Apple to produce this special software and put it on this one phone: the phone of a terrorist that killed 14 people in early December. If people are outraged and against the FBI requesting access to this murderer’s phone, then they should be outraged at the FBI getting their bank statements in order to track their money. The FBI doesn't want the information and data of innocents, but they want the criminal’s information and data so that they can stop crimes. Apple and other tech companies are hindering their ability to do their jobs. In the future, I hope that the American Government can build a better relationship with Silicon Valley.
