DISCUSSION OF BRITAIN'S STATUS IN THE E.U. CONTINUES

The famously conservative Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, has recently announced his position on Britain’s status in the European Union. He has joined those who wish for Britain to break away from the E.U., which serves as a reminder for how split the country is on this issue. Half of the country wishes to remain part of the E.U., while the other half wishes to break away.

The belief is that if Britain were to break away from the E.U., they would regain full control of their borders, as well as control over immigration policies and trade relationships. However, if Britain were to leave the E.U., they would lose military power. Obama also wishes for Britain to remain part of the E.U. He believes it makes Britain strong diplomatically, politically, and economically.

The debate of Britain leaving the E.U. has been going on for several years, and with upcoming elections this summer, the issue is not likely to be resolved. However, Steven Erlanger describes the issue well in his article, “London Mayor Joins Chorus Demanding Exit from E.U.” He writes, “...Britain, an island, is just far enough away from continental Europe to accentuate its difference, but too close to escape the pull of history, economics, and trade.” It will be interesting to follow the issue over the next few years.
