INCREASE IN EXPORTS IN THE ARMS TRADE
In Asia, there have been increased tensions due to a rise in the international arms trade. This is in part by China increasingly becoming a regional power. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, from 2011-2015, there was a 14% increase in the volume of international transfers in the arms trade. Both the U.S. and Russia are the major global arms suppliers, accounting for 33% and 25% of sales. However, China is also developing as a global arms supplier. It now accounts for 6% of sales, coming into third place. China’s rise as a global arms supplier can be seen in the growth and sophistication of its military. This rise provides another source of weaponry, in addition to those supplies provided by western nations. Additionally, from 2011-2015, 34% of arms imports were accounted for by India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Australia, and China. Asia and Oceania continue to be the largest importer of major weapons since 2006.
