KEEPING A PROMISE

By the time Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau took office on November 4th, 2015, he vowed to bring change to Canada in a fashion unlike his predecessor, Prime Minister Stephen Harper. At the time of his election, reported plans included lowering taxes for the middle class, while increasing taxes on those making $200,000 and more each year and boosting Canada’s economy by doubling national spending on infrastructure. Since the beginning of his term in office, the Trudeau administration has pushed to legalize marijuana in Canada. The 29th Canadian Ministry under Prime Minister Trudeau is the first cabinet in the history of Canada to be gender-balanced; it consists of 15 women and 15 men.

However, one of the most important changes Prime Minister Trudeau has brought to Canada is the welcoming of Syrian refugees to the nation. At the beginning of his term in office, Trudeau vowed to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees into the country by the end of December. However, the deadline had to be moved to the end of February, 2016 in order to properly resettle refugees.

By February 29th, 2016, 25,920 Syrian refugees had arrived in Canada since November 4, 2015. In fact, Prime Minister Trudeau personally greeted the first flight of Syrian refugees in December.
