THE MOST POLLUTED CITY

In 1990, the United Nations labeled Mexico City as the most polluted city on the planet. Since then, the city's air quality decreased greatly, and the pollution also causes nearly 1,700 deaths annually. Starting in 2008, the capital launched its first four-year plan to mitigate six million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent and then a new six-year program was started in 2014. Tanya Muller Garcia, Mexico's minister for environment, has been directing the efforts to clean the streets to make it much easier for pedestrians and bikers to move about. This is very crucial because the city is a densely populated area and biking is how over 200,000 people get around.
